FELICJA BLUMENTAL FESTIVAL'S 20TH ANNIVERSARY - 7-12.5.18 The Tel Aviv Museum of Art

FELICJA BLUMENTAL FESTIVAL'S 20TH ANNIVERSARY

HOSTING THE WORLD'S GREATEST MUSICIANS IN A HOMAGE TO THE FESTIVAL'S FOUNDER ANNETTE CELINE

May 7th to 12th 2018, The Tel Aviv Museum of Art

The Felicja Blumental Music Festival, one of Israel’s longest established and most acclaimed festivals, is marking 20 years of diverse musical activity. This year, however, the festival will be taking place without its founder, Annette Celine, Felicja Blumental’s daughter. Ms. Celine passed away in June 2017. For 19 years, Annette Celine was director of the festival’s artistic program, realizing her love of the arts and her wish to present music in all its variety in a series of events addressing style, performance and period. The 20th Festival will reflect Annette Celine’s taste, presenting artists and styles she especially loved. Artists and ensembles from all over the world who have taken part in the festival over the years will return to Israel to perform in the 20th festival, a festival entirely dedicated to Annette Celine’s memory.

L’Arpeggiata, under the direction of Christina Pluhar, first appeared in the Felicja Blumental Festival in 2006; at that time, it was still a totally unknown ensemble. As with other ensembles, Annette Celine was one of the first to recognize its huge potential. Since then it has become one of the most important ensembles in the world of early music and is invited to perform at major world festivals and venues. L’Arpeggiata will be presenting its beguiling program “Mediterraneo” - a musical journey around the Mediterranean Basin, in which fascinating cultural connections and fusions will be woven, from southern Italy eastwards, to Greece and Turkey and westwards, to Spain (Majorca and Catalonia) and Portugal. Also in the realm of early music, the Armonico Consort (UK) directed by harpsichordist Christopher Monks, with soprano Gillian Keith, will present a program of Bach cantatas. The ensemble’s first appearance at the festival was in 2007.

Annette Celine grew up in Brazil; there has, therefore, always a special focus on Brazil in the festival. This year, the festival will host singer/mandolin player Nilze Carvalho who will collaborate with the Israeli Chorole Ensemble, the latter returning to the festival following successful appearances in past years. Also from Brazil, we will host three singers – soprano Gabriela Pacce, alto Denise de Freitas and baritone Lício Bruno - together with pianist Sonia Rubinsky in a program dedicated to the

music of Heitor Villa-Lobos, who was a close friend of Felicja Blumental and Markus Mizne. The major work on the program will be the “Cicio Brasileiro”.
Annette’s liking for contemporary music and her ambition to promote women artists will find expression in the program of homage to composers Chaya Czernowin, Betty Olivero and Shulamit Ran. Conductor Ariel Zuckermann and the Israel Chamber Orchestra, together with a number of soloists, will perform a program of Olivero and Ran’s works’ Ensemble Nikel will perform works of Czernowin. The festival will also include a discussion session with the composers.

As every year, the Tremolo Percussion Ensemble of the Israel Percussion Center will return, this year collaborating with the Strasbourg Percussion Ensemble (France) in a program of music of the 20th and 21st centuries, a concert bristling with energy and rhythm.

The Israeli Jazz Orchestra will also be returning to the festival, this time as guests at the concert of trumpeter Avishai Cohen and bassist Eli Magen.

Israeli musicians - soprano Chen Reiss, pianists Daniel Gortler and Tal Haim Samnon, ‘cellist Michal Korman and clarinettist Tibi Zeiger - will join together for a concert of songs and instrumental works of Schubert and Brahms.

Other guests of the festival will be soprano Yael Levita, recorder player Tali Rubinstein accompanied by harpsichordist/pianist Apollonio Maiello (Germany), singers Lucy Shelton and Esti Kenan, Ensemble Marsh Dondurma in a performance for children, pianist Ofra Yitzhaki and other outstanding musicians from Israel and overseas, who will join to produce an unforgettable festival in Annette Celine’s memory.
